Old Post Coastal Path Diversion

May 2012 update: The path has now been diverted.  Most of the visitors have read the sign and have taken the new route.  However, parents have been seen taking their very young children past the warning signs and along the old path.

Please note that the start of the Pentire Head walk in New Polzeath, may be slightly more strenuous in future.

Below is a note from Mike Simmonds - Head Ranger

Dear All
Just thought I would report about the impending path diversion required on the Coast Path at Pentireglaze Haven, Polzeath.
A recent engineers report commissioned by Cornwall Council has concluded that the current walked section of Coast Path immediately to the north of Pentireglaze Haven has become too unstable to guarantee safety. The specific section is that behind ‘Breakneck Cavern’ – a small inlet caused by a fault – at Grid reference SW935797. Our advice to all walkers will be to stop using that section of path with immediate effect of us installing a barrier and notice. All should be aware that after this time any accessing of this location is entirely at one’s own risk!
Some of you may know that, in anticipation of this, the National Trust team already installed an alternative route 2 years ago. We will aim to close off the original walked route by Easter 2012 and all walkers will be diverted on the alternative path higher up the slope. We will leave the infrastructure in place for a short period as the new route establishes. After this, for appearances, to avoid attracting attention, as well as allowing us to recycle useful timbers, all handrails, steps etc in this short section behind the inlet will be removed.
Information signs will be placed throughout the closure and in agreement with Cornwall Council, the new route will be way marked as the coastal footpath.
